Quote 1:

“You can outthink me. That is relatively easy to do. But you will not outwork me. That is under my control.“

- Dharmesh Shah (HubSpot cofounder, entrepreneur, engineer, author)

There is a common understanding that professional athletes and artists take decades and countless hours to master their craft… to make the magic happen that leaves those around them amazed. However, when we talk about our own work, most of us talk about work-life balance while still wanting to attain success and financial freedom. I do not think this is impossible, but I do think you are competing against some amazing people out there who are obsessing over the same thing you are doing.

Let’s be real: I would never step onto a court against Michael Jordan or jump into a pool against Michael Phelps. That would be insane! I am neither a basketball player nor a swimmer. Just think about who “those guys” are in your industry, and make sure you are doing what it takes to be in the game - or better yet, beat them.

Quote 2:

“Your real job isn't to be first - it's to still be standing when others fall.“

- Alex Harmozi (entrepreneur, investor, author, fitness mogul)

Success comes in so many shapes and forms, and it can be defined in so many different ways. That being said, to define what success means to you, you should think about what it will take to get from point A to point B. Once you have that, it is just about keeping at it - day in and day out, putting in the reps and doing the hard work.

The key here is to disassociate yourself from the ups and downs and simply focus on the activity itself and the quality of execution. If you do just that, the odds are stacked in your favor. Keep going long enough, and you will outpace others and win.

Quote 3:

“You just have to keep pushing the boat out.”

- Thomas Braziel (investor, restructurer, distressed-asset specialist)

I love this sentence so much! And not just because I used to row haha.

There is so much wisdom in this: no matter the weather - that being the presentation of the situation - you have to go out fishing if you want to get the catch - that being the presentation of the activity we need to do. There are no ways around it. You just have to keep pushing that boat out!

On a personal noteDuring my rowing career, which lasted some 16 years, I cannot even begin to describe how often I didn’t want to get out of bed or move at all, let alone sit in the boat at 6 a.m. for 2 hours… But hey, I did it. Some moments I hated, some I loved, but I always did it. Mood had nothing to do with this decision. It was just something you did.

Therefore, I strongly believe (having lived through it myself) that once you reach this level of determination, where questioning the input is non-existent, it’s only a matter of time before you succeed. Just keep freaking going at it!

My ADHD would agree with this statement! 😂
