Quote 1:

“The riskiest thing in the world is to believe that there is no risk.”

- Howard Marks (investor, writer, Oaktree Capital cofounder)

There’s a familiar conversation that often happens between parents and their children when it comes to making life decisions. The main topic: safety - or more precisely, avoiding risk for the good of the child. The parent is the grown-up, the one who supposedly knows better how the world works. And knowing both its beauty and its dangers, the mother or father will do everything possible to minimize risk.

But this is where we enter the lie.

There is no such thing as a risk-free life. There’s no way to gain love, wealth, or status in society without putting yourself on the line.

Risk is either way there. So choose yours.

Quote 2:

“History does not repeat itself, but it rhymes.”

- Mark Twain (writer, humorist, satirist)

I’m sure everyone has heard the phrase that history repeats itself. However, even though it doesn’t really repeat 100%, it’s definitely similar. What does that mean for us today?

It means that if we take the time to observe history and those who came before us, we can learn and become wiser simply by embracing the lessons they left behind.

Why not tap into this collective knowledge?
Why not benefit from this wisdom?
Why not level up… for free?

Be interested.
Be curious.
Listen, learn and embrace.

Quote 3:

“I would not be dragged into something I did not want to do.”

- James Dyson (inventor, engineer, entrepreneur, founded Dyson)

Last but not least, besides making insanely good vacuum cleaners, Mr. Dyson is truly a character worth looking into.

All that being said, I find his stubbornness to be and do what he truly wants deeply inspirational. It’s all about setting clear boundaries around what you choose to do on a day-to-day basis - the very things that will bring you closer to your ultimate goal, your ultimate destination, your ultimate dream.

Therefore, do not let anyone else dictate what you can or cannot do. You are the only one who holds that power. Use it wisely.

On a personal noteWe all want to live a safe life and keep risk to a minimum. It’s simply human nature. However, if you think about it, the most amazing things happen when we’re willing to step out of that safety we live in every day. It’s like the fun and fulfilling part of life begins the moment we consciously take risky moves and decide to live life to the fullest.

There was a small chance for me to step out of the comfort of my hometown and the rowing career I knew so well. There was no real need to move or do anything. I had our family apartment for free and my safety guaranteed. But my spirit wouldn’t let me stay still.

I decided to move to Berlin. The place where I didn’t know the language and didn’t really have anywhere to stay. I lived in a room that was more like a storage unit in a shared house above some rowing club, where the heating didn’t work that first winter… I slept with two jackets on, while mist formed in the room with every breath I took.

I said yes to all of that because I wanted to make a move, take a risk, and experience something new. I wanted to live in the city I’d been obsessed with since I was a kid. It was hard. It was a risk. But oh my God, was it a good move. I loved the whole process, no matter how stressful it was. I love being in this place. My place. My new home.

Living on the edge 😎 😂
