“Light yourself on fire with passion and people will come from miles to watch you burn.”
Deep dive
Such a beautiful symbolism in this quote. People are drawn to others who are doing cool sh*t.
I remember a conversation not long ago with a guy who was so deeply into satellites and the future ahead of us that I couldn’t help but get excited myself.
It’s as if passion and excitement are a disease – get too close, and you might catch it.
“What ever is normal, do the exact opposite. No one was ever excited about normal.”
Deep dive
This is an interesting thing to think about. We generally tend to lean toward what is normal, average, and balanced, yet we are often most excited by things that go exactly in the opposite direction. Isn’t that an interesting paradox?
Choose where you want to be on the spectrum. Do what excites you.
Michael Jordan had a unique "Love of the Game" clause in his Chicago Bulls contract that allowed him to play basketball anytime, anywhere, without needing team permission or risking contractual penalties, a right most players did not have due to NBA injury concerns.
Deep dive
I feel like Michael Jordan is such a fascinating individual and character. We can spend a whole newsletter just writing about him. However, this clause on “Love of the Game,” on which Michael insisted before signing the document, says it all. He wanted to enjoy the game wherever and whenever he felt like it and did not want any contract standing in the way of his happiness.
Imagine having so much offered to you at such a young age, and still negotiating to have the freedom to play hoops with your homies in the neighborhood. If this is not true love towards what you are doing, I do not know what is.
ON A PERSONAL NOTE
Love Towards Sport
Reading about Michael Jordan made me think back to my professional rowing career. I remember the time when my friend and pair partner Luka and I were preparing for our first World Rowing Championship and would sneak out after every workout to play basketball. Our coach knew it and was always trying to catch us and stop us so we wouldn’t hurt ourselves. Let’s just say he had little success in stopping us playing.
Nevertheless, in the end we had a great season and won the gold medal. The competitiveness between my pair partner and myself drove that success, even though Luka, even to this day, would complain that I was playing basketball dirty. Honestly, I think he was just jealous that I was better. 😎
I hope you are reading this, Luka! 🫶
