Lately, as winter is creeping in in the northern hemisphere, I have been thinking a lot about life, business, and success in cyclical terms. The ski trip you take in the winter or the beach trip in the summer; the athlete who is putting in the work for years before he or she starts seeing results; the artist who produces so much art that no one is aware of before anyone even recognises their existence. Simply putting in the work before reaping the results…
Things come and go – this is the only thing that is certain in life. There is something magical and greater than ourselves in accepting this reality as the ultimate truth of life itself. I hope today’s email will inspire you to take a long-term look into your projects, your success, and your life in general.
Let’s dive in!
Quote 1:
“Tourist freak out when the seasons change and just bounce. And locals are aware that there are seasons. They comes in swings.”
- Shaan Puri (entrepreneur, investor, and podcaster on "My First Million")
It is summer and you are on the beach enjoying your mojito, willing to pay premium for the sunny beaches and the beautiful scenery. Fast-forward a few months and all of a sudden you find yourself in a rainy season, most likely cold and not wanting to be there anymore.
The moral of the story is: everything in life has its season, and so does success. It is not about racing to get somewhere only when it is nice, but about being there in both good and bad times. The ones who are there only for the season of success will most likely always be late to every success. Enjoy what you do, and then doubling down on it won’t feel like work.
Quote 2:
“Get a long term trend right.”
- Unknown
What do you believe is to be true today that will also be true in 5 or 10 years? What is the trend in your industry that you would be stupid not to follow? Now let the answer to those questions sink for a moment.
Just like the seasons in the previous quote, trends are too strong of forces to be ignored. You can be the best executor of a given task, the best producer of a certain product, or even the best in your field – if you do not swim with the tide, the tide will take you the wrong way. Do not fight the long-term trends, and you will live a happier and more productive life.
Quote 3:
“Tough times don't last, but tough people do.”
- David Senra (podcaster, historian, storyteller)
Now we covered the seasons that come and go in a circular manner, we talked about getting the macro trends right, and now finally we need to talk about you, my dear reader. Why you, you might ask? Well, it is simple. Without you putting in the work and enduring the hard times, seasons and trends will just be another topic on your mind or something you will talk to your friends about.
Hard work beats talent every time. Someone told me that when I was still a professional athlete. It still hits the spot.
Stay tough!
On a personal note — Like many others in the city where I live, Berlin (Germany), I get extremely depressed during the winter days. I mean, the weather is cold, the sun is non-existent, and the daylight barely shows up for weeks on end. Every winter I tell myself that this winter it will be different, and I find myself again stuck and depressed all over again.
This winter is, thank God, looking a bit different. I know we are just at the beginning, but hear me out. This time around, instead of fighting the fact that winter is coming (which I obviously cannot control), I am embracing it. I am embracing the beauty of taking more time to be at home, to sleep, relax, and recover on a deeper level. After all, our ancestors knew that very well and lived in sync with nature and the seasons. I mean, why the hell would I think I am any smarter fighting the facts?😅

But for real now… winter is coming 😅😅😅
